Obtain the Mercury Car Code
What you need to get the car codes from your Mercury is using an OBD I or II scan tool. This tool can be found at any auto parts retailer. If the Mercury is from 1996 or later, you need an OBD II scan tool; earlier model Mercury cars need an OBD I scan tool. When you see a warning or service light illuminate on your instrument panel, this is an indication that a trouble code has been sent to the Mercury’s On-Board Diagnostics computer. Don’t ignore the lights or you could risk further damage to your vehicle. This tool is alsoused to reset the computer and turn off the service and warning lights after you have retrieved the codes and made the repairs.
1. Locate the OBD port under the steering column to the left of the fuse panel cover. Plug the OBD I scan tool into this port on your Mercury. Don’t force the OBD cable into the port or you could damage the pins.
2. Put the key into the ignition and turn it to the “Acc” position.
3. Wait for the scan tool to retrieve information from the computer and then display “Ok” on the face of the scan tool. When it does this, turn off the ignition and unplug the scan tool.
4. Find the menu on the scan tool and scroll through it to locate the “Stored Engine Codes” options. Select this option and write down the codes Look up these codes in the scan tool’s booklet. Now, you can find the codes location on your car.
